a letter to kumasi i always imagine how to write kumasi now; or how to reconstruct the tethered dissonance in an implosion of a poem to write, you see, is to imagine: the waste of growing away; or the bulrushes still and saintly, when unnameable darkness lifted our souls in befuddled farewell you see, to imagine… a child ,folding geography of faith in the dusk of your land, my earth, making music and meaning of ashanti consonant of his name anowa,I do not know kumasi any more: and i must have thought her a child too for memory is not a wandering across the deep grey nor the lapidary psalms nor waterpots and raffiadance: memory becomes a mystery like the grieving geometry of the fourteen days like akosombo clouds the baptizers would take home to exile anowa to write is hardly to repossess although i bear a weight of Ashanti consonant in my name,a most knitting ague of devotion |
