Rivulets

[For Honourable U.U.Ukonu Esq.
Chief Registrar, Customary Court Of Appeal,
Abuja, Nigeria.]

******************************
...this season of earthing
skein for oiled skin
has washed our bonfire with heavy rain.

Whom shall I tell that
Bro. Oriugo** is dead?

Drenched are the haemorrhage
of dreams startled out of sleep.
Gone is the fly whisk
that routs flies from gnawing our wounds.

Whom shall I tell
that Bro. Oriugo is dead?

Songs die in our parched tongues!
No more will his shadow sire
our melodious cackle that at crescendo
invite gusty tongues to taste our banter.

Whom shall I tell
that Bro. Oriugo is dead?

Death, you have scuttled the songs
of his innocent children.
Death,you have felled the finest
friend whose warm hands opened to all.

Bro. Oriugo, crushed are these stones
which sprouted smiles before.

Forgive me ... Stubborn is my unbelief;
in stupor the serenades of Digu***.

With this dagger plunged deep in our ribs
Only our tongues taste life
from rivulets of tears.
