Winter open pool sessions for kayaks and canoes at UAB Rec Center every other Tuesday night beginning Tuesday January 16th through March 27th (1/16, 1/30, 2/13, 2/27, 3/13, 3/27) 6:30~9:30 p.m. Students, faculty, staff, UAB alumni and non UAB boaters are all welcome.
Cost:
Students & Rec. Center members: $ 8.00
Children under 17 accompanied by a paying guardian: $10.00
Others (17 & older) $15.00
Hosted at The UAB Campus Rec. Center Pool, 1601 University Boulevard.
Participants will be subject to Rec. Center guidelines and waivers. Anyone under 17 is required to have a paying parent or guardian present. All boats must be rinsed prior to putting them in the pool. Participants must use the buddy system while practicing rolls to insure safety. Participants must not engage in horseplay and abide by the rules of the pool. Spread the word; tell all of your paddling friends.
White water boating is an inherently dangerous activity. These open pool sessions are not meant as training or instructional courses. As always, there is no substitute for proper instruction from qualified sources mixed with a generous application of common sense. No trainers or instructors will be provided during these sessions. If you have not had training in safe white water boating you should take a course. UAB Outdoor Pursuits will be offering a beginning white water Kayaking course in the spring. BCC is offering training also.
Directions: From 20th St South go towards I-65 on University Blvd. The Rec Center is on the left around 16th St. Pass the rec center and turn left on 14th St. Turn into the student public parking and drive as close to rec center as possible. You will enter at patio below the track that hangs over the building. There is a hose to wash your boat and any gear to get sand off. After 4PM the public may park in student parking.
