America has had real men of God: Peter Cartwright, Francis Asbury, Sam Jones, Rolfe Barnard and Glenn Conjurske, for example. We may never reach their caliber nor even aspire to do so but we can surely learn from them and sorely need to.
Where are the men who, as national figures, can speak to our condition? Everyone just about is so well educated yet so ignorant of God. Everyone who’s savvy enough to publish him or herself and thereby gain an audience is outdoing the other via high-tech media. We have professional, mega informed commentary coming out of our ears and noses, but no spiritual compass. Where are the men of God who can speak as the hour demands? America is lost, cast adrift on a sea of irreligion, humanism, materialism, relativism, irrationalism, pragmatism, appeasement, rapprochement, expedience, compromise, unbelief and outright denial.
God is not owning our professionalism, either. That much should be obvious. Man, though sophisticated, is still wicked. He still needs a Saviour to escape Hell. America once knew this but this truth has been lost in a national sense.
When are we going to state without fear that, in terminating his own life, the Virginia Tech mass murderer dispatched himself to Hell? He didn’t merely cease to exist. He sealed his own fate as well, for eternity, with one pull of the trigger. Wickedness, unrepented of and unforgiven, carries the consequence of eternal ****ation and this truth has been erased from America's national consciousness.
The church in the West is largely an irrelevance. And I wouldn’t be surprised, because our numbers are so small (I don’t refer to mere churchgoers) and our strength is very little, if we'll end up marginalized to ghetto-status, where not incarcerated. Really, that's the current status quo ante bellum—i.e. pre- "the Revolution."
What about calling for fasting and prayer? That's where it needs to start — with us all. We can't expect God to be with us in power when we’re all over-involved in non-spiritual activity and where, we might add, we're patently out-of-step as a 'unit of war.' I'd be surprised to learn if the church in China is so absorbed. Yes, they're persecuted and tortured — it hasn't come to that for us (yet?) Unless there's a volte-face of no mean avoirdupois from our present naïve and comfort-loving course, we're not going to see the power of God manifest on our behalf.
Trying to save America while the situation is a trash trap of irreligion and compromise will only, I fear, result in people being jailed and killed. It's fine to love and defend freedom, but taking a stand for righteousness against sin has to occur first and a lukewarm and full (in need of nothing) church will tolerate pretty much anything else except this.
The culture war has been lost in America. In thinking of "Psy-Cho" I thought (out loud): "Lord, they’re getting worse!" This wicked monster is a product of a nation that has been, by degrees, spiritually hijacked. What, I wonder, would that great 19th Century American man of God, Peter Cartwright, do in our circs? Certainly, he wasn't faced with what we are (too, he had a lot of spiritual "sympathy") and maybe our present perplexing intertwingulation would leave even him just as flummoxed as we are, but despite the evils and privations he met, real religion was planted by he and his ablest Methodist cohorts and predecessors in America. In order to realize that kind of influence again, men would have to take a singular stand for Truth and righteousness, attended by consistent self-denial, and who of any of us are up to such rigors? Also, there are few Wesleys and Cartwrights.
So what does God expect of us? To not, I would posit for one, be over-zealous for saving a nation. We have more basic concerns to deal with, I believe. The lost will take notice of Christianity once again in the West if they see we mean business and I wonder if the wisest tack in doing so isn’t to stake out places of refuge where we can live in some semblance of normalcy (does anyone know what that is any more?) even if it means leaving the affluent nations, in order to pray and seek God for His power and make an uncompromising stand for Truth? And indeed, to then follow Cartwright's lead and take it right up to the enemy's camp.
Some other thoughts: When are men going to rein women in and be their heads? They know not how. Truth has fallen. When are women going to be silent and let the men lead? They know not how either, so it seems. Where is anyone who is prepared to lose all, if necessary, for the sake of Truth? Don’t the words of the Lord Jesus Christ count for much anymore?
Dear Lord, please give us men – and women – who can once more show us how it's done.
