I would like to know more about Munchausen patients who feign mental rather than physical illnesses. Can someone who has Munchausen Syndrome also have Munchausen by Proxy?
I ask because the mother of one of my daughter's schoolfriends has alienated most of the other parents with her constant stories of the abuse and trauma she (the mother) has suffered at the hands of relatives, medical professionals, etc. The stories are clearly exaggerated, if not outright lies, as she can not keep the details straght between one telling and the next, and can never back up any of her statements with facts. No matter what, she is always the victim. The reason I ask about MSBP is because she has long claimed that her daughter (age 6) is deaf. This child has been to our house many times and I can guarantee you she hears just fine! The little girl cannot speak clearly (she sounds like a 2 year old) and has been held back in kindergarden. Her mother blames everyone for her daughter's failings (the teachers, the doctors, the other kids)but takes no steps to help, or change the situation. When the doctor tells her "Jane" hears very well, she claims he's an idiot. She has even gone so far as to enroll her child in a school for the deaf! She was not accepted. They too are apparently idiots.
What I would like to know is whether or not this woman has any kind of Munchausen's. She seems desperate for attention, and has displayed other erratic and unhealthy behavior. We (the other mothers) are very concerned for the well-being of her children ("Jane", 6, and "Mick",11),and we have reported her to the B.C.Ministry for Children, Canada.
