My mother-in-law has a medical history that is unbelievable, and keeps getting worse. Most of the time it's illnesses that are difficult to prove, but sometimes there is real self-harm like purposely falling down stairs and such. She has also sued insurance companies and doctors, etc, but I believe this is a secondary motive. Mostly, she is out for sympathy and medical nurturing I think. I believe she had MBP when her kids were young, but now that they're grown, the ailments have focussed on herself, and always at times when attention seems to be on someone else, she ends up hurt or sick. I'm no pysch doc, but I have no doubt she has maunchausen's and maybe mbp also (she is now claiming stuff about the grandkids). Unfortunately, we are long distance from her so we especially prone to hear her fantastic sob stories of her health without a way to confirm them. Anyways, we are glad to find this forum- there is very little about this on the web surprisingly. My question is though... she obviously sees a ton of doctors and ER rooms and everything, this puts both her and the doctors at risk. Is there a way to address or get a hold of the doctors she sees to alert them of her tendencies associated with munchausen's? We don't know who her doctors are since we are not near her, but there is no question to my husband and I that she has munchausen's and we would like to alert the medical community of it for the safety of all involved. Other than that, should we address it with our mother too? Should we say to her, "we think you have munchausen's and need help. We love you though."? Or would something like that only encourage it to get worse? Suggestions? |
