TTTS nightmare

we are a young italian couple who, since few days ago, were living one of the most exciting period of our life due to the fact that we were waiting identical twins.

Unfortunately few days ago (20th weeks of pregnancy) we discovered that one of the two baby died (probably during the 17th or 18th weeks of pregnancy) and FOR THE FIRST TIME we came across with the TTTS problem affecting identical twins.

We weren't prepared at all to this and now we are living a nightmare because it seems that nobody can guarantee us that the other baby has not been affected by ttts !! He moves and seems healty at the moment.

Today we had the first result of the test of "Risonanza Magntica Nucleare" where the brain has been anylized by three expert doctors and found apparently not damaged.

The next exame will be in 15 days time when the brain is a bit bigger (23rd week).

If even this result doesn't show any cerebral lesion then we will have to take the most difficult decision of our life based on this elements:

NEGATIVE ELEMENTS

Intrauterine death of one monochorionic twin in TTTS puts the survivor at high risk of intrauterine death or of developing ischemic/hypoxic lesions.

POSITIVE ELEMENTS

The positive result of the "Risonanza Magntica Nucleare" which gives reasonable probability that the fetus is healty.... reasonable probability is enough??

Is it possible that there's no way to be sure if the living fetus has been affected by TTTS?

How can we make a decision?

Thank for all you do in this site

Re: TTTS nightmare

Hi, my name is Anna, Im also Italian!
I really can relate to ur situation, at 21 weeks one of my identical twin girls has passed away. It was totally unexpected. I went from feeling like the luckiest person in the world to living the worst nightmare a first time mother has to go through. I would love to hear how u guys coped with the following desicions u had to make with regards to your surviving twin. My heart goes out to you both and i hope that everything turned out for u. What happened is so tragic, but i really believe that the survivor is special and strong and no matter what happens she has touched me in a way that will affect me for the rest of my life. Thank u for ur time hope to hear from u anna
