Re: Rough Collie Puppies

Hi Tracy,

It's wonderful to hear that you are looking for a sable and white dog for agility, but to be honest with you, I think that rather sadly any blood lines that may once have had some "agility blood" in them are likely to be too many generations away to be of any guidance these days. This is only my opinion, but as we are the proud owners/handlers of 3 of the 5 or 6 Rough Collies that we have ever seen at aglity competitions in the UK over the last 4 years, I do feel that I am qualified to make the observation (we haven't seen a sable and white other than ours at all)

I would love to see more Rough Collies competing in agility - there is no question that ours have greatly benefitted from it and they certainly enjoy the excitement of it and the bond between us is all the more stronger for it. They all come from different show breeds and the breeders are rightly proud to have an agility dog amongst their triumphs, but the bottom line is that our guys do well and enjoy their agility because of the time and effort we have put in to training them. Trying to find a line with agility blood is therefore likely to be rather difficult. It will be the time and effort you put in to training that will pay off in the end

Re: Rough Collie Puppies

Thanks Paul,

I did think it was a long shot but I'm certainly not shy of the training and work I have an 8 yr old border collie cross who was given to me overweight and given 6 months to live if he didnt lose half of his bodyweight 3 years on and loads of hard work he is fingers crossed about to start his agility career.

Rough collies deserve a break from just being beautiful accessories and I want to challenge this stereotype and prove that Rough Collies are more than a pretty face!

Re: Rough Collie Puppies

Hi Tracy
Nice to hear from a like minded prospective agility RC enthusiast. I've a 15 month old merle boy who has been training for 3 months. So far showing promise, just wish I had some experience of this fascinating sport, however we are both having great fun learning and that's what it's all about. Some folk I've talked to say RC's are too timid, too slow etc. etc. Had lots of positive advice from Paul and Penny and attended the training day on May 7th (along with lots of lively smooths but where were all the roughs?) If it helps at all I chose my puppy because he was the livliest, happiest most responsive of his litter although he was the smallest and lightest in weight. He is still light for his age (20kgs) but so keen and quick to learn and such a happy pleasant soul. We do lots of obedience training as well both formal and now starting gold citizen training, but I never see any other RC's at any of my training venues (4).

Re: Rough Collie Puppies

Success I managed to get hold of a lovely lively sable and white pup he is now 20 weeks old. laid back in the house and loony in the garden! Any pointers in the right direction on his pre agility training would be helpful. Thanks
Janet

Re: Rough Collie Puppies

Hi Jillian

Where in West Yorkshire are you? Do you want an agility club or general training or both? There are a few agility clubs in the area (most have waiting lists so worth getting in touch soon!) and some excellent training clubs. Let me know where you are near and I may be able to make some suggestions. (We are in North Leeds near Roundhay - with a Smooth!)

Best wishes
Janet
