tendency to run away?

Hi, our rough collie boy is now 4 and 1/2 months old. at about 3 months old, he was walking off lead and got frightened (a horse nearly stamped on another dog) and started running away. no matter how we called him, he wouldn't stop. luckily he eventually stopped after running for 300, 400 meters. very scary experience. any advice on the matter would be much appreciated. thanks

Re: tendency to run away?

Hi Daisy,

We had the same trouble, not with our Smooth Collie, but with our Sheltie. If he felt threatened in any way then he bolted. Not always towards us, unfortunately. He then got injured because a larger dog thought the running was a game, chased and jumped on him.

He did grow out of it, but only slowly. In the meantime we only let him off the lead for short sessions, when we could see there were definitely no 'threats'. Otherwise he stayed on a flexi-lead so that we could get him back quickly before he had time to panic.

I think we got very good at seeing problems approaching. That way he was off the lead as much as possible - but always back on again before anything happened!

Good luck. Jean
