Pricked Ear

My Smooth Collie Pup of 5 months has recently developed a 'Pricked Ear' which is most likely due to teething. Can anyone suggest a method to resolve the problem and allow the ear to return to its normal position. Many thanks in anticipation of you're help.

Re: ******* Ear

Have you tried any ear bracing at all? I have a dog with ***** ears - bracing his ears were too traumatic for all of us, and with no bracing . . . well, let's just say he looks extremely alert.

My puppy, on the other hand, has one good (tipped) ear and one that is sometimes tipped and sometimes ******** I've had very little success bracing them; she is too determined to remove the braces. I've been told it just takes a lot of practice. The most success I've had with her is using bubblegum and just mashing it into the very top inside of her ear, then covering the gum with talc or fine dirt to keep it from sticking to her other hair. Her sire, at four years, still has to have his braced from time to time. I had been told that once teething was over, the ears were permanently set, but that does not seem to be the case with all of them.

Burlywood collies has an in-depth explanation of how to do bracing, too. http://www.burlywood.com/collies/ears.htm

Good luck!

Re: ******* Ear

We found with our first dog that applying dabs of glycerin on the tips of the ear until they tipped plus some talc to stop it sticking worked a treat. However, it was not so successful with dog number two as dog number one insisted on licking it off

With our latest dog we used something called something like "Ka-oh-lin" - I'm sorry I can't remember the exact name. I know it's a chinese name and google doesn't help . I will try to find out more, but it is basically a leather softener. I got hold of some from a friend who has horses as it is commonly used to prevent saddles from hardening. If you can get hold of some, applying it to the point where you want the ears to fold should do the trick. It certainly worked beautifully for us

Re: ******* Ear

Glad it worked, Gerard

Just remember if you have another dog around when trying this in the future keep an eye on the other dog to make sure they don't lick it off

Re: ******* Ear

I in the past have used kaolin poultice which is available in some chemists.you warm a blob and it will stick to the ear but also wash off easily.vary the size of the blob of poultice to get the correct amount of ear tip tip.
