Collie losing fur

Hi~
I have a 7 yr. old smooth collie. A week ago, he went to the groomer for his Spring bath. All this week he has been losing his fur - horribly! He is almost bald in some spots. Just petting him brings out hands full. He seems to be itching as he rubs on the back of the couch, leaving hair all over the couch and piles on the carpeting. I spoke to the groomer, and she said she didn't use anything different on him. He goes there 4 times a year for a good bath. We have never had this problem before.
I gave him a Benadryl tonight hoping that will help.
Can anyone help???
Joan

Re: Collie losing fur

Perhaps the drier was too hot or too close to his spine where there is less fat/flesh to absorb the heat? might not have been for a terribly long time but could be enough to really irritate the skin without actually burning it. Some dogs love the drier and won't move away till it's causing them quite a lot of discomfort - it doesn't mean the groomer has done anything wrong but it's worth reminding him/her next time so that an eye can be kept on him. Hope he's more comfy by now but you may need the vet to check him out if it doesn't clear fairly quickly- all the best!

Re: Collie losing fur

Hi, Julie, how is your boy doing? Did you find out what was wrong with him since it sounded much more than seasonal casting. Hope he's back to normal now!

Re: Collie losing fur

Thanks for asking, Joan. Jordan is doing fine now. Whatever it was is gone. It's been in the 90's here with high humidity, so he's shedding a bit, but not losing his fur like he was. Maybe your were right, he could have gotten too close to the dryer. I'll make sure I mention it to the groomer next time we go.
