Rough collie with pemphigus

Hi,

I have a 2 year old rough collie called Simba who has had problems with his nose and mouth for around a year now, which have got progressively worse and the vets have recently diagnosed pemphigus- although they are not sure yet whether or not it is pemphigus foliaceas or pemphigus erythematosus. He had a strong dose of steroids to get the disease under control and is now on a tablet every other day. The disease has affected him very badly, he used to enjoy and be able to take part in lots of activities like going out horse riding with me, and he was in an obedience and agility club but he is now so easily exhausted it is impossible for him to manage more than a small walk a couple of times a day. It seems such a shame that he cant enjoy the activities that he used to, and I just wondered if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this disease and possible other ways to control it? I would be very grateful for any advice at all, With many thanks, Amy

Re: Rough collie with pemphigus

My original rough collie had a similar problem on her nose and muzzle area. A biopsy was carried out. This was early 1990s. The lab recommended that we change her feeding bowls from plastic to metal or pottery. We were also advised to remove all plastic toys. A number of collies and shelties who played with plastic plant pots have responded well after removing plant pots. Collies can be allergic to plastic beds as well. Apparently some form of fumes or vapour emanate from some forms of plastic to which collies in particular are sensitive. Not sure whether your collie regularly comes into contact with plastic items or, indeed, whether your vet has suggested this to you.

A herbal preparation available from Dorwest Herbs has helped a number of collies to regain its pigmentation - ORGANIC ELDERBERRY & NETTLE EXTRACT - a rich natural source of iron and iodine - an ideal addition to the diet to improve pigmentation and coat condition. This has helped a number of rough collies we have rehomed. Why not give Dorwest a ring - they are very helpful. Telephone 0870-733-7272 or 01308-897272.

I would be interested to know if you were already aware of this potential cause of allergies in the rough collie. If not, I really hope these suggestions will help.

All the best
