collie maturing

I'm going to get a rough collie female and would like to know at what age do they stop their puppy ways and become a mature constant companion?

Re: collie maturing

I hope a Rough Collie owner will also answer this.

My Smooth Collie started to get more sensible at about 3, and still has silly moments now he is well on his way to 9!

I'm sure girls are more sensible....

Re: collie maturing

Hi Eston,

I have my first Rough Collie ***** and she was 2 last November.

I do obedience competitions with my dogs and also have 2 shelties in test C....As the Rough Collie is my first I can only compare her to those and it really depends on what you mean by 'puppy ways'!

From the start she has been much easier to train but I encourage it through play, so from what I see of other collies, I would say she is quite lively...but then I only see the others at breed shows where they are required to stand still.

Having said that she seems to learn much quicker than the shelties but I would say is more immature than them at the age she is now, but that maybe because she is more exhuberant, which is what I want. However, she will settle down at a word, has never chewed anything or caused damage and has been a wonderful companion since I had her at 8 weeks old. I have never had any problems with her mouthing or biting and her house training went pretty much as normal.....

Can you tell me more about what you mean about 'puppy ways'? I am very interested. Are you having a problem?

Re: collie maturing

bit confused as to what you mean by puppy ways.
I am on my fourth rough, and from what I have discovered, they dont really "grow up" until about 9ish.
My Poppy is 5, and still is a complete nutter, lively and loves the sound of her own voice. She is very clean tho, and doesnt chew (except biros!)

Thing you have to remember that although roughs are very rarely worked like they used to, they are essentially still a Collie, although not as intense as their border and bearded cousins, they still need lots of stimulation, love training, and although they arent demanding in their exercise requirements, they do love a good gallop, and a football.
