agility

Hello everyone! I was thinking about doing agility with Heidi and know they have to be a certain age before they can start training, what age is it? I think she might prefer to do that instead of obedience. She is 10 and a half months now. Full of energy and likes to bark, which is only one of her problems! She is more confident now but still spooks a little but not to the extreme that she did before. I am going to Prestwick obedience show on Sunday if anyone wants to chat and give me some pointers. I have entered her in pre beginners, I'm not sure to do her stays because she is not very confident when I leave her. Also I have entered my tibby in the same class, which I should have entered him in beginners so the stays didnt clash! This is also her first show. Fingers crossed she behaves!!

Re: agility

Hello Hazel,

You don't say whether she is a Rough or a Smooth Collie?

You can start training for agility at about 7 months, but keeping the jumps very low and not doing too much weaving at first. You might not want to do full height A-frames etc until 12 months though, as Roughs and Smooths are large dogs and they aren't fully grown until about then.

I don't know that we have any members likely to be at Prestwick - shame you couldn't come along to their agility show a few weeks ago - I could have met you myself then.

Good luck!

Re: Re: agility

Hello Jean, Heidi was a dogs trust puppy, they said she was a rough cross. Dont know what with. I saw Joan Day at a show and she was convinced she is a pure rough, as do a lot of people when they see her, however, she has coat length of a border collie. She doesnt seem to have the temperament of a pure rough either. This is maybe due to the fact she was taken from her mum at 4 weeks old.

Re: agility

Hi Hazel,

Sorry, should have checked back all the posts to where you posted one before!

Perhaps Joan will be at Prestwick, though I don't think she's managed to get to many shows this year.

There is a very good Rough Collie which lives in the north of England and competes at many Scottish agility shows. 'Ellie' won the RSCTA agility league for the last two years, so there are pictures of her on this website.

Do you have a good agility club to go to?

Re: Re: agility

Hello again Jean, sorry I dont have my own computer so I have to come to library to do this! I did a trial session with my tibby last year with a lady out at Thornton but I have lost her name and number. I will try to locate her again. I just read Paul and Misty's account on this site and I have to say it sounds great fun. I think Heidi will love all the running around and jumping. Just my fitness I would be unsure about! But I do need to lose a little weight and get healthier!
