Rough Collie doing heelwork

If you've never seen a Rough doing classy heelwork go to www.obedienceuk.com
Click on Out&About and scroll down to Winchester show where you'll see Tanni Thompson(and Pat,of course)doing beautiful Test A heelwork - Tanni's head is up,she's smiling and her tail is wagging. You must be very proud of her,Pat! No wonder you're clocking up the scores in the Obedience league. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Re: Rough Collie doing heelwork

Hi Joan,

Tanni is actually doing Test B in the picture. You should see her fast pace she loves it!

We are having a bit of a glitch in the out of sight stays at the moment but I think I haven't trained it thoroughly enough yet. She enjoyed them yesterday at least, when she rolled about on her back for 3 minutes in the 'down' out of sight. .

You know these Rough Collies are so clever...when we were doing scent the other day, she went back to check we hadn't put the scent cloth back in the tin on the table as well as checking the others! Seems logical to me...that's where she saw me get it from.

Thanks for the kind words. We are still enjoying ourselves.

What about you?

Re: Rough Collie doing heelwork

Hi,Pat,very mixed here,I'm afraid. Florin has spent the last three months in a rather anxious state - I think she still feels responsible for David's wellbeing and is only now beginning to play properly again. He is fine this year but she watches him all the time and sticks very close to him! At shows she works not too badly IF sendaway isn't first exercise but of course it usually is and she just collopses yet she adores SA at home- she puzzles me. Anyway I've decided to be strong and masterful(well, sort of)in training this week and she's prancing along beside me as if to say,'Thank goodness someone's in charge here,I don't need to worry!'-----We'll see at our next show.
As for Flight, well,I've struggled all summer to get her working with her head up and showing some willingness but she just plods along more or less beside me. I can't make up my mind whether she's unhappy or just bloodyminded, but since I had to remove the food from my person(it's only yards away in a very obvious tub) the quality of her work has been abysmal compared with what it was. Well, that was the situation till just before Lochaber show(19th/20th July) when for some reason she jumped up at me in the garden and I played a very short game with her, pushed her off and walked away- she rushed after me,whammed into the heelwork position and did the best bit of work since April! I had only one training session before Lochaber and as I'm Chief Stay Steward there she was in the car all day both days till mid-afternoon and went into the ring without even a warm-up.I was prepared for yet another disappointing struggle but she,and therefore I,had a great time and I really feel we've turned the corner at last. The proof of the pudding will be at Govan(9th Aug)- keep your fingers crossed for us! I seem to remember her Great, great Aunt Flicka loved that kind of game,I certainly remember the bruises from somebody!

Re: Rough Collie doing heelwork

Well,we went to Govan and had the best work since early April, not accurate enough to be in the cards but Flight's head was up and she stepped out beside me as if she really wanted to be there AND it was very wet AND we had no toy in my pocket - we just had a very wild game between exercises and straight to the tub of food as soon as we came out of the ring. We have 2 shows first weekend in September and perhaps BAGSD(Birmingham)last Sunday of that month,so this improvement is too late for 2008 but I do feel we now have a future as a team - roll on 2009!
Florin excelled herself - a slow sendaway and the fastest recall, straight past me and out of the ring to the sausages!

LOL!@ Florin! Don't you just love 'em? Florin and my Sheltie Dusky must have secret talks I think they sound so much alike!

Nice to come away from a show with something positive though isn't it?

Sounds like we may miss each other in September...I'm doing the 20th/21st BAGSD weekend but not the one the following Sunday as we have GSD of Wales Champ show on that Sunday. Maybe next year we'll be meeting up more often?
