Supplies

Hey y'all! As many of you I have recently joined up and have begun my long journey of assembling all the proper items needed to live the wonderful life of a reenactor. I was informed that this is a great place to broadcast so here I am.

If anyone has anything they are looking to sell or part with please respond to this post or send me an email with the item in question. My main objective here is to look for a rifle. Anything else is great. So far I have a jacket, vest and hat. (I fight for the south with the 4th Virginia)

Hope everyone has a great day and I look forward to our next event and many there after!

-AJ

Re: Supplies

Haversack: rolled blanket, knit, or pillow case as a flour sack. Canteen: Water bottle with cork in a knitted pouch (glass = a no no) to look like a wine bottle, socks white crew soaked in watered brown or grey paint, pants jogging pants in lt or dk grey or sky blue. Check with your captain. I'm sure you'll want to upgrade.

Re: Supplies

Or you could do it the right way and talk with your NCO and buy the right kit to start with. There are many of us in the hobby who make quality uniforms or can point you towards reputable sutlers. I would rather see a new recruit build his kit slowly and right then get it all now and have it be farby and wrong. Each unit should have loaner gear to get you started and help you along. As to a rifle talk with your unit and others from time to time you can find great deals on rifles and other equipment. One of my men got a full stand of arms for 300 bucks. Just hang in there you will do fine with a little help. Really, jogging pants?

Re: Supplies

I don't know the 4th's standards but the NCWC Union units wouldn't let you on the field in sweatpants. Your best bet is to ask for loaner gear, and invest in good gear as you can. I would steer away from the heavy wool trousers available at events. If you spend just a few dollars more you can get lighter, yet far more durable fabric from some online sutlers. I like Jarnigan's wool as far as sky blue kersey goes, but again I don't know what your unit's needs are.
As far as a rifle, also check with your unit. You will want to know what your regiment was issued before you buy.
If you can get some good loaner gear for an event or two, take the time to ask around and buy carefully so you don't regret your purchases.
Good luck!

Re: Supplies

AJ, good avise, take your time and research your unit, plus always check with your NCO before jumping into a uniform. In 1861 their were 10 companies of the 4th VA Infantry that were attached to the Stonewall Brigade. 4 of the 10 were militia. Units such as the Rockbridge Rifles, Mountain Guard, Augusta Grays, Ready Rifles, Montomery Highlanders, Grayson Daredevils, Rockbridge Gray and the Liberty Hall Volunteers all had somewhat different uniforms. Of all accountablilties of issuance, socks were the hardest item to get. Good luck, have fun and don't shoot at the Union Battalion Color Sgt.

Re: Supplies

Gratitude to all for your responses. We are the Grayson Daredevils. Im looking into purchasing pants for the upcoming event then its purchasing a rifle.

Wait...Color Sgt?! Oh dear. My deepest apologies but I actually killed you at Fort Stevens last year. Second battle of the day on Saturday I believe. Was my first engagement and I was determined to take you out. Even called it out in the heat of battle. After you went down I was so elated that I had forgotten to pull the hammer all the way back and missed the opportunity to discharge my weapon before I took a hit and went down.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Mission and wish everyone a very safe drive

Pvt. Reed

Re: Supplies

The Grayson Daredevils were issued Harper Ferry rifled muskets which were fitted for the saber bayonet. This is just information for you and make sure you confirm what you unit wants you to purchase.

Re: Supplies

AJ,

Years ago my captain wrote up some great uniform and equipment guidelines for the 4th Virginia. Does your unit still have them?

Please no jogging pants...

Dan

Re: Supplies

I don't think you shot me, must have been one of the other color guard lads. I order for you to shot and hit me you would have had to elevate since I was in Missouri reeancting the 150 Battle of Lexington.
