Victor Sen Yung's Best Performance

If you missed it in August, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) presents an encore presentation of "The Letter" (1940 WB). The film stars Bette Davis and Herbert Marshall, and features Gale 'Spider Woman' Sondergaard and Victor Sen Yung.

Of all his film appearances, including his role as Number Two Son, Mr. Yung considers "The Letter" as his best performance.

In the article SOCIETY HONORS PIONEER CHINESE-AMERICAN ACTORS (Dec 1977; located in THE STUDY of this website), Mr. Yung states that the role, in The Letter, "gave me an entirely new dimension." This is not our 'Jimmy Chan'.

FILM TITLE: "The Letter" (1940 Warner Bros.)
AIR DATE: Thursday, October 13, 2016, 8:00 PM EST.
Check your local TV listing.
CABLE NETWORK: Turner Classic Movies (TCM)

Enjoy.

Re: Victor Sen Yung's Best Performance

Steve, I did miss the film, Dang! But "thank you so much" for pointing me to that most interesting article on Rush's website: http://www.charliechan.info/id89.html !

I wasn't able to attend that November 1977 dinner by the Southern California Chinese Historical Society to honor those Chinese pioneers: Victor Sen Yung, Benson Fong, and Keye Luke, as I was stationed in Taipei Taiwan at the time with the U.S. Air Force (Oh yeah...and I wasn't invited :) Aloha Lou

Re: Victor Sen Yung's Best Performance

Dear Steve,

Thank you for the heads-up on "The Letter"! I will set our DVR accordingly! "The Letter was filmed right in the middle of Victor Sen Yung's role as Number Two Son, Jimmy, in the 20th century-Fox era of the Charlie Chan series.

Thanks again, sir, and, as always, "thank you so much," Victor Sen Yung, for all you gave to us!

Sincerely,
Rush

Re: Victor Sen Yung's Best Performance

Wow, I missed it entirely...it's coming up (not past), that's great!

Broadcast Date for THE LETTER

Aloha Lou,

As I write this reply, I am sitting at the Charlie Chan booth at Murphy's Bar and Grill in Honolulu's Chinatown. From the window of the booth, I can see the old Honolulu Police Station Building and Chang Apana's detective office.

It's no problem that you confused the broadcast date for the film THE LETTER. It's Thursday, Oct. 13th. Everybody is entitled to slip once in a while.

Throughout history, many great men have become confused over little things like dates and such. For example, take Warner Oland. During the filming of the Chan films, Mr. Oland used to have a sip of "Tiger Juice" to help him with his lines.

Excuse me. (into the bar area): Hey bartender! Where my scotch and soda?

Lou, you're in fine company.

That's "tongue in cheek". Too much Tiger Tea.

Re: Broadcast Date for THE LETTER

Ah yes, Steve. I know that booth at Murphys with the view of Chang Apana's police station very well! Look forward to the day when I can join you there once again to talk story and walk the streets and haunts of America's most famous detective.
