This week's Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Dangerous Money"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Problems rarely wait for clearing weather.”
Happy Monday! As we move along on our CHARLIE CHAN FILM TOUR 2016, we will be viewing “Dangerous Money,” starring Sidney Toler. Amidst the beauty of the South Seas, murder raises its ugly visage as greed and “dangerous money” combine, creating a deadly brew, indeed! Can Chan and his companions, Number Two Son, Jimmy and Chattanooga Brown, the cousin of Birmingham Brown, solve this case before one of them, too falls victim to the killer?

We will also be sharing, before our featured presentation, another episode of “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan,” “Captain Kidd’s Doubloons,” which can be viewed at this link: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-07-captain-kidds-doubloons-video_677ed00c5.html.

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “Dangerous Money” (1946). Runtime: 66 minutes…AND “Captain Kidd’s Doubloons” (originally aired October 21, 1972; Runtime: 22 minutes)

SUMMARIES:
“Captain Kidd’s Doubloons” - Charlie Chan and the kids are on vacation in Trinidad. During a Buccaneer Days celebration, a prized exhibit, the Captain Kidd doubloons, is stolen, which brings Chan and his family into action.

“Dangerous Money” - Aboard a passenger ship in the South Seas, undercover agent Scott Pearson tells Charlie Chan that he is being sent to Samoa to investigate the sudden appearance of money and artworks stolen from Philippine banks during the Japanese invasion. Later, while the passengers gather in the salon for a ceremony to celebrate the crossing of the equator, Pearson is stabbed in the back and killed. Chan, along with Number Two Son, Jimmy, and assistant Chattanooga Brown, works to find the killer who lurks among the passengers.

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: Often our features can be found available online, happily, tonight’s feature is presently available, although in TWO PARTS, at: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv3a3e_charlie-chan-dangerous-money-part-1_shortfilms and http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv3agu_charlie-chan-dangerous-money-part-2_shortfilms

OF NOTE: The film's working title was “Hot Money.” The title card reads, “Charlie Chan in ‘Dangerous Money’". ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news items add the following information about the production: Prior to his appearance in this film, Rick Vallen served a term in the U.S. Coast Guard. Restaurateur "Don the Beachcomber" gave technical advice on the South Sea Islands. It was the wish of Jack De Witt, the actual writer of the screenplay, to credit his wife, Miriam Kissinger as the writer.

PLEASE have a happy, safe Monday…see you tonight as we explore the mysteries of the South Seas…

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
