This Week's Monday Evening Chat features "The Trap" (and an "extra!)

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Levity is a great cure-all.”

Greetings, on this mid-October Monday! This week’s stop on our CHARLIE CHAN FILM TOUR 2016 will be at Malibu Beach as we view “The Trap,” starring Sidney Toler in his final appearance as Charlie Chan. Who is the killer who stalks a variety troupe that is vacationing at southern California’s famous Malibu Beach?

We will also be sharing, before our featured presentation, another episode of “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan,” “The Bronze Idol,” which can be viewed at this link: http://www.toon.is/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-08-bronze-idol-video_ba93e5f0a.html.
OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Trap” (1946; Runtime: 66 minutes)…AND “The Bronze Idol” (originally aired October 28, 1972; Runtime: 22 minutes)

SUMMARIES:
“The Bronze Idol” - Arriving at a South Seas island on a small, private vessel, Charlie Chan and his family learn from the tribal leader that the Great One, in the form of a large bronze idol, is threatening the inhabitants with destruction if they do not continue to make offerings of valuable pearls to him. Realizing that there is much more to the story, Chan and the kids search for the answers.

“The Trap” - The members of Cole King's variety troupe occupy a Malibu, California beach house. One of the showgirls disappears, and her body is discovered by San Toy, a Chinese member of the troupe. Because Lois has been strangled, a murder technique said to be favored by the Chinese and the French, both San Toy and Adelaide, who is French, are under immediate suspicion. San Toy, who is a friend of Jimmy Chan, asks his father to investigate.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature, “The Trap.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: Often our features can be found available online, happily, tonight’s feature is presently available at: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x297kc7_charlie-chan-the-trap-1946-sidney-toler_shortfilms

OF NOTE: Working titles for “The Trap” were “Murder in Malibu Beach” and “Charlie Chan in the Trap.” This is one of two Chan films in the series proper to have been filmed in large measure on location, the other being “The Black Camel” (1931). “The Trap” marked the final film appearance for Sidney Toler, who died on February 12, 1947. Roland Winters assumed the role of Charlie Chan in the 1947 film “The Chinese Ring.”

A GHOSTLY REMINDER: Please be prepared for our eerie gathering on Halloween Night, October 31, as we hold our annual Charlie Chan family Virtual Halloween Party! Come virtually costumed as any character, good or bad, human or animal and prepared for FUN!

PLEASE have a happy Monday, and let’s gather together for a visit to the beach, complete with a couple of murders, with Charlie Chan…

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
