Tonight's Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: Boris Karloff in "Mr. Wong, Detective"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Detective sometime summoned to witness crime.”

Tonight we celebrate the birthday of Boris Karloff! Mr. Karloff appeared in a major role in a memorable Charlie Chan movie, “Charlie Chan at the Opera,” as well as in another, more obscure role in another “Charlie Chan" film, “Behind That Curtain.” Tonight, we will see him in yet another picture with a Charlie Chan connection as we share “Mr. Wong, Detective,” a movie that provided the plot for last week’s “Docks of New Orleans” with Roland Winters. In this evening’s entry, Karloff plays San Francisco-based detective James Lee Wong who, when a chemical manufacturer is killed after asking the detective to help him, Wong investigates this and more murders that occur, reveling a much deeper plot!

As is our custom, we begin arriving at 7:30 Eastern Time, we will be sharing, before our featured presentation, an “extra.”

OUR PRESENTATIONS:
1. Boris Karloff is honored on “This Is Your Life” (Television program, 1957; Runtime: 25 minutes)
2. “Mr. Wong, Detective” (1938; Runtime: 69 minutes)

FILM SUMMARY:
When a chemical manufacturer is killed after asking detective James Wong to help him, Wong investigates this and two subsequent murders. He uncovers an international spy ring hoping to steal the formula for a poison gas being developed by the first victim's company.

NOTES: The plot of “Mr. Wong, Detective” provided the storyline for “the Charlie Chan film “Docks of New Orleans,” made a decade later by the same studio, Monogram. Also, actor Lee Tung Foo appears in both films in a similar role.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra,” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our featured movie: “Mr. Wong, detective.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: Often our features can be found available online. Happily, our feature for this week IS presently available online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vlJ-HraBRY and our “extra” can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEw-dlHK4vg
