Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "The Shanghai Chest"...and more...

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Have two ears, but can only hear one thing at time.”

As we near the conclusion of this year’s journey through the entire Charlie Chan film series and related material, we have reached “The Shanghai Chest,” the third film from monogram Pictures starring Roland Winters as Chan. In this adventure, when Judge Wesley Armstrong is murdered, his nephew, Victor, is accused of the crime. Charlie Chan (with his Number Two Son, Tommy and assistant, Birmingham Brown) helps his friend, Lt. Mike Ruark, work to find the truth in a case that becomes more complex and more victims are found dead at the hands of the mysterious killer!

As is our custom, we begin arriving at 7:30 Eastern Time, we will be sharing, before our featured presentation, an “extra.”

OUR PRESENTATIONS:
1. The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan in: “The Mummy’s Tomb” (1972; Runtime: 22 minutes)
2. “The Shanghai Chest” (1948; Runtime: 65 minutes)

FILM SUMMARY:
In San Francisco, Judge Wesley Armstrong is stabbed to death in his study by an intruder, and Victor, the judge's nephew, who has come to see him, is attacked and rendered unconscious. As the police arrive at the Armstrong home, they discover Victor recovering consciousness and holding the murder knife in his hand. This, plus other incriminating evidence, makes him the prime suspect in the murder. When Charlie Chan comes to see the district attorney to apologize about a misadventure with his number two son Tommy and assistant Birmingham Brown, word is received that two sets of fingerprints were found on the knife - Victor's and those of a criminal who was executed six months earlier. Lieutenant Mike Ruark asks for Chan's help with the case.

NOTES: This film's working title was “Murder By Alphabet.” Louis Mason is listed in the Call Bureau Cast Service in the role of the cemetery custodian, but the part was actually played by Paul Scardon.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra,” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our featured movie: “The Shanghai Chest.”
