This week's Chat and Film Viewing: "Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Humble presence of no more importance than one drop of rain in cloudburst.”

This week as we continue along on our Charlie Chan Film Tour 2017, we have reached the final stop in our warner Oland phase of the Charlie Chan series. “Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo” sadly marked the final appearance of Warner Oland as Charlie Chan. In this adventure, father and son, on their way to Paris for an art exhibition in which number One Son, Lee, is a participant, find themselves caught up in a case of investment fraud and murder!

As is our custom, we begin arriving at 7:30 Eastern Time, we will be sharing, before our featured presentation, an “extra” in the form of a vintage Charlie Chan continuing radio drama! Following our “extra,” we will collectively run our feature at 8:15!

OUR PRESENTATIONS:
1.“The Landini Murder Case” (part 25) radio program (1936; Runtime: 14:36)
2.“Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo” (1937; Runtime: 71 minutes)

FEATURE SUMMARY: Charlie Chan and number one son Lee are passing through Monte Carlo on their way to Paris for an art show in which Lee has a painting. They meet Inspector Jules Joubert, chief of police of Monte Carlo with whom they work to solve the murder of the courier of a wealthy financier, Victor Karnoff, who was carrying a fortune in bonds. Among the many suspects are Savarin, a bitter financial rival of Karnoff, Evelyn Gray, a beautiful blonde without visible means of support, and Al Rogers, a shady bartender who is blackmailing Mrs. Karnoff.

FILM NOTE: “Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo” was Warner Oland's last film. Oland began work on “Charlie Chan at the Ringside” in January of 1938, but the production was halted when the actor walked off the set on the 17th of that month. According to news items, there was a dispute between Oland and the studio.
