This week: "Charlie Chan at Treasure Island"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “If befriend donkey, expect to be kicked.”

THIS WEEK Charlie Chan’s trip with number Two son, Jimmy to San Francisco becomes a search for a killer even before their arrival! In this adventure, which provides magic, a séance, an eerie residence, a world’s fair, a bizarre mystic, and much more, not to mention a perplexing mystery, Chan and son take on the unknown, possibly to their own peril, to solve the reason and killer behind the death of an old friend. Is it any wonder why “Charlie Chan at Treasure Island” is regarded throughout Chandom as probably the best movie of the entire Charlie Chan film series!

As is our custom, we begin arriving at 7:30 Eastern Time, we will be sharing, before our featured presentation, an “extra” in the form of a vintage Charlie Chan continuing radio drama! Following our “extra,” we will collectively run our feature at 8:15!

OUR PRESENTATIONS:
1. “The Landini Murder Case” (part 29) radio program (May 28, 1936; Runtime: 14:21)
2. “Charlie Chan at Treasure Island” (1939; Runtime: 74 minutes)

FEATURE SUMMARY: On a Clipper flight from Honolulu to San Francisco, Paul Essex, a novelist friend of Charlie Chan, appears to have committed suicide. At the Golden Gate International Exposition, held on San Francisco Bay's Treasure Island, Chan, with Number Two Son, Jimmy, at his side, investigates a strange mystic called Dr. Zodiac who, the detective learns, blackmails clients.

FILM NOTES: According to ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news items and production charts, John Carradine and Joyce Compton were to be included in the cast of this film, but their participation in the completed picture is doubtful. (Watch closely for the photograph on the wall of John Carradine in Rhadini’s office!) According to Kay Linaker, Gerald Mohr was the voice of Dr. Zodiac. An April 19, 1939 ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news item refers to the film as "Charlie Chan at the World's Fair." The Golden Gate International Exposition, held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay February 1939 to October 1940, provided the backdrop for some of the picture's action.
