Our Moday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Charlie Chan in City in Darkness"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Patience big sister to wisdom.”

THANK YOU SO MUCH everyone, for your kindness and understanding during the troubles we had on last Monday evening which resulted in the postponement and rescheduling of our Monday Evening Chat! We had a very good turnout for the rescheduled event on Thursday evening! You guys are GREAT!

THIS WEEK Charlie Chan travels to the city of Paris to meet with a group of fellow Intelligence Service members to mark the 20th anniversary of their involvement in the Great War. It is September 28, 1938, and the European powers are poised on the brink of another major conflict. As the City of Light goes dark under these tense circumstances, Chan is caught up in a case of murder. However, the trail toward the solution of this case is fraught with grave danger for the famous detective!

As is our custom, we begin arriving at 7:30 Eastern Time, we will be sharing, before our featured presentation, an “extra” in the form of a vintage Charlie Chan continuing radio drama! Following our “extra,” we will collectively run our feature at 8:15!

OUR PRESENTATIONS:

“The Landini Murder Case” (part 30) radio program (June 4, 1936; Runtime: 13:43)
“Charlie Chan in City in Darkness” (1939; Runtime: 69 minutes)
FEATURE SUMMARY: Charlie Chan is in Paris attending the twentieth anniversary gathering of members of the Intelligence Service, who have come together in that city to mark the occasion. There, as the City of Light is darkened by the gathering clouds of impending war, he investigates the murder of a munitions manufacturer who was supplying arms to the enemy.

FILM NOTES: “Charlie Chan in City in Darkness” begins with newsreel-like footage featuring actual European leaders of the moment, including Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Edward Benes (then president of Czechoslovakia), and Neville Chamberlain (then prime Minister of Great Britain, who became famous for his "Peace for Our Time" statement based on the dubious outcome of the Munich Conference which figures at the end of the film via Charlie Chan’s ominous warning).

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra,” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 (EDT) when we share our featured presentation “Charlie Chan in City in Darkness.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.
