The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Recently, w have had discussions, since the passing of Elena Verdugo, who figured prominently in "The Sky Dragon" (1949), as to whether any actors/actresses, besides those who made a brief, uncredited appearance as a child. It seems that Janet Warren (also known as Elaine Morey) who is seen in this week's Monday Evening Chan film, "The Jade Mask" (1944) is still with us. In that movie she played Jean Kent, and, at age 95, she just may be the last remaining Chan actor/actress. Our best wishes to her for good health and happiness in her remaining years.

Sincerely,
Rush Glick

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Rush, as was posted on the Charlie Chan Message Board, Gloria Warren from "Dangerous Money" may still be alive.

Also, another thought I posted on the CC Message Board concerned lesser-known actors with smaller parts in the Chan films, and if any of those people are still alive. For example, I tried looking up information on Danny Desmond, who had small parts as a bellboy in "Jade Mask" and "Chinese Cat", and it seems that he may still be alive. Perhaps there are other actors who had minor roles in Chan films who are still alive, though not well-known.

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Hi, John!

Thank you! There is, as you mention, the possibility of a few others who had at least a minor speaking role in one or more Chan pictures still being alive today. You mention Danny Desmond, and it would be interesting to be able to track down ANY information on him, even a date of birth! Here is a link to a bit of information on Janet Warren (Elaine Morey):

Thank you, again, John!

Rush

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Indeed we all wish, i'm sure, good health & happiness---but what about a touch of adventure?
.....I think we all share the same appreciation to Rush for his research & scholarship. The labor of love that is this website is the result of the brick-by-brick, jade-block-by-jade-block accumulation of his pursuit of the lives & times of America's greatest detective, his extensive family, the men who brought him to life, & the entertaining criminals who made it all necessary. The news that a Chan film cast member is still with us is a cheering thing. I'm curious about her identity, however. Janet Warren---Elaine Morey---hmmm. Is there more game afoot? What opportunity---or danger?! in the most recent 70 years of this beauty's wanderings---led or required her to put away one mask & fox-fur ensemble for another? Was there a love child? A secret manuscript? A "blue" reel? Let's hope so!
.....May Miss* Warren/Morey have all Rush has wished for her on our behalf, & may she be the equal of any who might be foolish enough to try bringing adventure to someone who shook the hand of the Chan. May she always have a clue!

*I subscribe to the earlier traditions of chivalry, literature, & the Chicago Manual which address all ladies of the theater as Miss.

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Very interesting. She also appeared in "The Shanghai Cobra" that same year (1945) as the "record machine operator"!

I've tried logging in two weeks now, during the Chats--under all three methods. I used to be able to get in under FLASH. However, now it appears:

1. JAVA: My browsers not JAVA enabled (Google Chrome)
2. FLASH: I need Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.0 or greater installed.
3. Mobile/HTML: Error Code=337. This feature is not configured.

I'll keep trying! "The fates are busy, and man may do much to assist" (The House Without a Key, 1925, Chap 7)

Aloha, Lou
P.S. I did start on time and watched the film

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Hi, Lou!

I am sorry that you have had all the trouble trying to enter our Chat Room. I know that your perseverance will eventually pay off, but what a mess in the meantime! The wheels of "progress" don't seem to make the basics of technology any easier!

Yes, you are right about Janet Warren also appearing in a prominent role in "The Shanghai Cobra" which will be coming up soon (on the 28th) on our Monday Evening Chat schedule. Here is a little more information for Janet Warren, also known as Elaine Morey at this link:

Take care, Lou, and I hope that you will be able to be with us for next week's Chat on "Eclipse Day," if the Internet "fates" are in compliance!

Sincerely,
Rush

Re: The last remaining Charlie Chan cast member?

Rush, thank you so much. I believe what I will try next week then, is using "regular" internet explorer (the blue "e" with the yellow circle around it). I know there are a lot of things you can not do when you one uses Google Chrome. Hope to see you on then, and thanks for the link.

Aloha Lou
