This week's Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Dangerous Money"

This Monday we bring our month of September to a close as we share the month of September flies by, we gather to share “Dangerous Money,” starring Sidney Toler with Victor Sen Yung as Number Two Son, Jimmy, and Willie Best as Birmingham Brown’s cousin, Chattanooga Brown. In this adventure, Charlie Chan, traveling through the South Seas, becomes involved in a deadly case of stolen artworks and…dangerous money!

Also, as our weekly “extra,” we will be sharing another of the cartoons from the 16-episode cartoon series from 1972 which featured KEYE LUKE as the voice of Charlie Chan, “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan.” The episode we will be sharing will be the third one, “Will the Real Charlie Chan Please Stand Up,” which can be found online at: http://watchcartoonsonline.eu/watch/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-episode-3-will-the-real-charlie-chan-please-stand-up/

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “Dangerous Money” (1946; 66 minutes) …AND “Will the Real Charlie Chan Please Stand Up (1972; 20 minutes).

FILM SUMMARY: Aboard a passenger ship in the South Seas, undercover agent Scott Pearson tells Charlie Chan that he is being sent to Samoa to investigate the sudden appearance of money and artworks stolen from Philippine banks during the Japanese invasion. Later, while the passengers gather in the salon for a ceremony to celebrate the crossing of the equator, Pearson is stabbed in the back and killed. Chan, along with Number Two Son, Jimmy, and assistant Chattanooga Brown, works to find the killer who lurks among the passengers.

FILM NOTES: The film's working title was “Hot Money.” The title card reads, “Charlie Chan in ‘Dangerous Money’". ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news items add the following information about the production: Prior to his appearance in this film, Rick Vallen served a term in the U.S. Coast Guard. Restaurateur "Don the Beachcomber" gave technical advice on the South Sea Islands. It was the wish of Jack De Witt, the actual writer of the screenplay, to credit his wife, Miriam Kissinger as the writer.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our special short “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for this Monday evening, “Dangerous Money.”
