Monday Night: "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Sometimes mask of simplicity hides face of fathomless mystery.” (“The Point of No Return”)

This Monday we will be sharing two of “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan,” a television crime drama from 1957 staring J. Carrol Naish as Charlie Chan. The two episodes will be: ”The Point of No Return” and “A Bowl By Cellini.” For those of you who have these adventures available for viewing, you are in for a treat, indeed!

Also, as our weekly “extra,” we will be sharing another of the cartoons from the 16-episode cartoon series from 1972 which featured KEYE LUKE as the voice of Charlie Chan, “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan.” The episode we will be sharing will be the third one, “The Eye of the Idol,” which can be found online at: http://watchcartoonsonline.eu/watch/the-amazing-chan-and-the-chan-clan-episode-5-eye-of-the-idol/

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Point of No Return” (1957; 25 minutes), “A Bowl by Cellini” (1957; 25 minutes) …AND “The Eye of the Idol” (1972; 20 minutes).

FILM SUMMARIES: “The Point of No Return”: Charlie Chan, still in Venice following his previous adventure, works to solve the apparent murder of wealthy man with a dubious past.

“A Bowl by Cellini”: In Rome, a tourist is tricked into purchasing a fake artifact. When it turns out that the artifact is, in fact, a precious artwork, Charlie Chan seeks to find the truth behind what develops into a mystery laced with death.

FILM NOTES: “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan” was shot mainly throughout England and Europe on location. This 39-episode crime drama starred J. Carrol Naish, a two-time Academy Award nominee, as Charlie Chan. Naish had also appeared in a major role in “Charlie Chan at the Circus,” starring Warner Oland. “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan” also featured a young up-and-coming actor, James Hong, as Number One Son, Barry.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our special short “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for this Monday evening, “The New Adventures of Charlie Chan.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

Re: Monday Night: "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan"

The description of one of the shows you will be watching reminds me of a Hildegarde Withers film called "The Plot Thickens", where a Cellini Silver Cup is a key item in a murder investigation. Perhaps there will be some plot similarities between these two shows.

Re: Monday Night: "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan"

Dear John,

Interesting! It is definitely possible that the writers of this episode had at least elements of "The Plot Thickens" in mind.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Rush
