Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Mr. Moto's Gamble."

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Distance no hindrance to fond thoughts.”

THIS WEEK, we are sharing “Mr. Moto’s Gamble.” This picture began its life as “Charlie Chan at the Ringside.” However, this was sadly not to be. In this adventure, we find Charlie Chan’s Number One Son, Lee, taking a criminology course that is taught by none other than Mr. Moto. Soon, Lee is assisting on a dangerous case of gamblers, fixed fights, and MURDER!

Preceding our Charlie Chan feature, our weekly “extra,” will be another chapter, episode 26) of the 1936 radio dramatization of “The Landini Murder Case,” an adaptation, of Earl Derr Biggers’ “Keeper of the Keys,” the only Biggers Chan Story never to have been made into a film, starring Walter Connolly.

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “Mr. Moto’s Gamble” (1938; 72 minutes) …AND “The Landini Murder Case,” Episode 26 (Radio Drama: 1936; 15 minutes).

FILM SUMMARY: Lieutenant Rigs takes famous detective Mr. Moto and Lee Chan, a student in Moto’s criminology class, to a prizefight between Bill Steele and Frank Stanton, where the winner will take on the champion, Biff Moran. However, the fight is fixed and gangster Nick Crowder bets big money that Stanton won't make it to the fifth round. He is knocked out in the fourth and dies shortly afterward.

FILM NOTES: Warner Oland began work on “Charlie Chan at the Ringside” in January of 1938, but the production was halted when the actor walked off the set on the 17th of that month. According to news items, there was a dispute between Oland and the studio. “Mr. Moto’s Gamble” was released on April 7, 1938. Ironically, the film was released in Sweden on August 19, less than ten days after Warner Oland passed away during a visit to that, his native country.
