Our Monday Evening Chat Film: "Dangerous Money"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Numbers cannot control life expectancy.”

THIS WEEK: We travel the South Pacific with Charlie Chan and son, Jimmy, along with Chattanooga Brown (Birmingham’s cousin) as the famous detective, now in a post-war posture, becomes involved in a case of smuggling and DANGEROUS MONEY!

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “Dangerous Money” (1946; 64 minutes) AND we continue our “extra” presentation with another cartoon episode of “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan,” starring Keye Luke, who provides the voice of Charlie Chan: “Will the Real Charlie Chan Please Stand Up? (1972; 20 minutes).

FILM SUMMARY: Aboard a passenger ship in the South Seas, undercover agent Scott Pearson tells Charlie Chan that he is being sent to Samoa to investigate the sudden appearance of money and artworks stolen from Philippine banks during the Japanese invasion. Later, while the passengers gather in the salon for a ceremony to celebrate the crossing of the equator, Pearson is stabbed in the back and killed. Chan, along with Number Two Son, Jimmy, and assistant Chattanooga Brown, works to find the killer who lurks among the passengers.

FILM NOTES: Our film's working title was “Hot Money.” The title card reads, “Charlie Chan in ‘Dangerous Money’". ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news items add the following information about the production: Prior to his appearance in this film, Rick Vallen served a term in the U.S. Coast Guard. Restaurateur "Don the Beachcomber" gave technical advice on the South Sea Islands. It was the wish of Jack De Witt, the actual writer of the screenplay, to credit his wife, Miriam Kissinger as the writer.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our special short “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for this Monday evening, “Dangerous Money.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

OUR MONTHLY POLL: Please take a moment to cast your vote in our September 2018 Poll, located at our Entrance Page (http://www.charliechan.info/index.html)!

NEXT WEEK: Join us on Monday, October 1, as we view “The Trap,” Sidney Toler’s final movie. Also, we continue our next series of pre-movie extras with the third episode of “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan” cartoon series featuring Keye Luke as the voice of Charlie Chan!

THE COMPLETE 39-EPISODE COLLECTION OF “THE NEW ADVENTURES OF CHARLIE CHAN”…A BARGAIN ON EBAY: What I consider to be the best collection available of "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan" is now being offered at The Nostalgia Merchant Store on eBay for $25.98 with FREE POSTAGE! This is your chance to purchase all 39 episodes of this 1957 TV crime series starring J. Carroll Naish as Charlie Chan with James Hong as his Number One Son, Barry. That's just 65 cents per episode!

At different points during our yearlong tours through the entire Charlie Chan series, we share a pair of these half-hour-long adventures. (These are RARELY available for viewing online, and even then, perhaps one or two random episodes at best!) This is a great opportunity for anyone who lacks these adventures in their personal collections to pick up one of these nicely produced box sets, which is one of the two versions that I have.
