Our Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "The Shanghai Chest"

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Patience are virtue one must hug to bosom.”

THIS WEEK: Charlie Chan, with Number Two Son, Tommy and assistant, Birmingham Brown, are together to solve a string of murders. What is the connection between all of the victims?

OUR PRESENTATIONS: “The Shanghai Chest” (1948; 65 minutes) AND we continue our “extra” presentation with another cartoon episode of “The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan,” starring Keye Luke, who provides the voice of Charlie Chan: “The Mardi Gras Caper“ (1972; 20 minutes). (Unfortunately, with our online versions of our Chan Clan cartoons seen through YouTube, commercials are sometimes automatically inserted at the beginning and each 5 minutes.)

FILM SUMMARY: In San Francisco, Judge Wesley Armstrong is stabbed to death in his study by an intruder, and Victor, the judge's nephew, who has come to see him, is attacked and rendered unconscious. As the police arrive at the Armstrong home, they discover Victor recovering consciousness and holding the murder knife in his hand. This, plus other incriminating evidence, makes him the prime suspect in the murder. When Charlie Chan comes to see the district attorney to apologize about a misadventure with his number two son Tommy and assistant Birmingham Brown, word is received that two sets of fingerprints were found on the knife - Victor's and those of a criminal who was executed six months earlier. Lieutenant Mike Ruark asks for Chan's help with the case.

FILM NOTES: This film's working title was “Murder By Alphabet.” Louis Mason is listed in the Call Bureau Cast Service in the role of the cemetery custodian, but the part was actually played by Paul Scardon.

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for our Monday evening, “The Shanghai Chest.”

A FINAL NOTE: Use those creative writing talents that I know you ALL have to write an article for a year-end Charlie Chan Family special publication! You can pen anything that you would like to share! It can be about your favorite aspects of our Weekly Chats, or it can be about your experience as a charlie Chan fan over the years (how you "discovered" Charlie Chan, how you watched Chan movies over the years, how you have shared the detective with others - family and friends, etc!). You may wish to share a description of your personal Charlie Chan collection of memorabilia, or you might wish to share some film trivia....ANYTHING Chan-related! So, please consider this invitation to contribute to our first attempt at a Charlie Chan Family publication. You can email your contribution to: charliechanfamily@lycos.com. Happy writing, and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Sincerely,

Rush Glick
