Fond Memories of AMC & Charlie Chan

Hi all,

I decided to pop in the old AMC copies of our Honorable detective and watch the tapes with the commercials and it ran the film without breaks. CC at the Racetrack is going right now. Sure took me back to a great time and place in my life viewing this film as I type. Monkey going crazy in the horse stall right now. Boy AMC was king back then, and people enjoy watching old movies without worrying who would not like them now. Copy is in great shape not as good as them DVD set, but hey that added to the fun of watching, kind of like the rabbit ear days.

Just wonder your thoughts on these and your memories....

Dear OMF,

I share your fond memories of the old AMC, back when they were the only national cable outlet that periodically showed charlie Chan films! I recall happily setting my VCR to record these showings! One time, I worked close enough to home to hurry there on my lunch break to pull the tape that had just finished recording one film and then throwing in a fresh one for the next showing during one of AMC's Charlie Chan Marathons! Yes, as you said, those were fun days!

Thank you for sharing!

Sincerely,

OMV, Rush, how true. We had Ernie Anderson here in Cleveland OH as "Ghoulardi," hosting our late nite creature feature! They did wonderful spoofs on various neighborhoods and peoples, but never in a malicious manner. And they always made fun of themselves! Those days are gone though. My favorite was "The Kilbasi Kid!" I also enjoy watching these old movies, especially now that I am retired and have free time. In addition to my copies of some of the Chan marathon films, I still have old Betamax tapes of Chan movies from the 1980's. The tapes are "noisy" and blurry, and I haven't watched them in a long while. Back then, our cable TV carried a channel from Boston that hosted a mystery movie on Saturday nights, hosted by Charlie Laquidari (or a name similar to that). The introduction had spooky piano music, and an old house in the fog. There were occasional humorous studio scenes interspersed in the movie. We used to watch these movies on weekends with family and neighborhood friends. I miss those old days, and rewatching my Chan films is a way to remember the past.

Re: Fond Memories of AMC & Charlie Chan

"Charlie Laquidari" great moniker! Last night (Sunday) a local UHF station here, W16DO-D, Cleveland OH, showed "Charlie Chan's Secret" at 10PM, on their: Who Dun It Theater!

Next Sunday it's Sherlock Holmes Fatal Hour (1931). It great to see these still available (if one still has rabbit ears :)

Re: Fond Memories of AMC & Charlie Chan

Lou, you are blessed indeed to have an independent local channel that shows those films! Now, this is definitely a "blast from the past"! Do they show Chan films with any regularity, and is there also a throwback-style host?

Re: Fond Memories of AMC & Charlie Chan

John, those are great memories, indeed! Those old tapes (BETA!) are treasures, like going back in a time machine to an, alas, simpler era. If any of your taped films contain commercials - normally the bane of avid film viewers - those, too, can now be fun-to-see glimpses back to older cars, forgotten products, then-emerging technologies, and maybe even the famous "I've fallen, and I can't get up!"

My very best to you in your retirement!

Sincerely,
Rush
