OUR CCF MONDAY EVENING CHAT AND FILM VIEWING FOR AUGUST 26, 2019: "The Shanghai Cobra"

OUR CCF MONDAY EVENING CHAT AND FILM VIEWING FOR AUGUST 26, 2019

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Rising generation sit too much.”

OUR CHAT ROOM: Our Chat Room can be accessed the same way that we accessed by going to our “Chat Room” link at charliechan.info, or use this direct link: Chat Room

THIS WEEK’S PRESENTATIONS: “The Shanghai Cobra” (1945; 64 minutes) AND we have as our “extra” presentation, Chapter 6 of the movie serial, “Secret Agent X-9“ (1945; 20 minutes), which features our Number One Son, Keye Luke, as well as our Number Three Son, Benson Fong.

FEATURE SUMMARY: Charlie Chan is sent by the government to investigate several murders connected with a bank where a vital store of radium is kept. A number of employees of the bank have been killed by an injection of cobra venom. Chan remembers a similar case back in Shanghai in 1937, but the suspect in those murders, his face disfigured in an explosion, escaped. Number Tree Son, Tommy, and assistant Birmingham Brown help the detective as the trio places themselves in mortal danger as they track down the illusive "Cobra Killer."

FEATURE NOTES: The title card for this film reads: “Charlie Chan in ‘The Shanghai Cobra.’" In “The Shanghai Cobra,” we see an odd one-way video jukebox operated from a distant location. This is very probably an adaptation of the idea of "Soundies," popular during the early to mid-1940s. Soundies, precursors of today's music videos, were viewed on special 16 mm rear-projected machines called Panorams. These machines were located in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, etc.

WORD OF THE WEEK FROM OUR FILM:

peacherino - (From Spanish) Variant of peach. A very attractive woman.

Joe: "...he went through here like a flash chasing the peacherino."

TIME: We begin with arrivals and greetings at 7:30 EASTERN TIME. Then, we share our “extra” presentation, “Secret Agent X-9,” which will be followed at exactly 8:15 when we roll our feature for our Monday evening, “The Shanghai Cobra.”

LOCATION: Our Charlie Chan Family Chat Room, which is accessed at http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html.

IF YOU LACK A COPY OF OUR FILM: Often our features can be found online. Happily, both our feature as well as our extra are available online. Please use the links provided at our Chat Room.

OUR MONTHLY POLL: Please take a moment to cast your vote in our AUGUST 2019 POLL, found as you scroll down our Entrance Page (The Charlie Chan Family Home)!

OUR CCF CHAT ARCHIVE: Please take a look at our growing collection of CCF Chat Texts from previous years and this year: Charlie Chan Family Chat Archive

NEXT WEEK: Please join us on Monday, September 2 (Labor Day), as we continue our Charlie Chan Film Tour, following Charlie Chan as he travels south of the border to Mexico City. In a very strange, inexpiable case of murder and espionage centering on the discovery of a new radioactive element, Chan assists his good friend, Inspector Carvero.

A GREAT CHARLIE CHAN BLOG!: A great blog site, The Postman on Holiday, offered by our own Lou Armagno which is: "A place to explore all things surrounding Detective Charlie Chan, his creator Earl Derr Biggers, and their connection with Hawaii, Cleveland, and mystery fiction." Currently featured this month is a fun celebration of Earl Derr Biggers’ 135th birthday…Take a look! It can be found at this address: The Postman on Holiday
