OUR CCF MONDAY EVENING CHAT AND FILM VIEWING FOR JUNE 13 “Phantom of Chinatown”

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Confucius say, ‘No man is poor who have worthy son.’" (“Charlie Chan at the Race Track”)

GREETINGS: We celebrate the birthday of our Number One Son, Keye Luke, with a shared viewing of the ONLY film in which he received top billing.

OUR CHAT ROOM: Our Chat Room can be accessed the same way that we accessed by going to our “Chat Room” link at charliechan.info, or use this direct link: http://www.charliechan.info/id17.html

We Begin our evening at 7:30 Eastern Time with a 45-minute time for arrivals and greetings. During this time, we also have the opportunity to engage in open dialogue or perhaps an impromptu sharing of a short video upon request! Then, at precisely 8:15, we begin our feature film simultaneously starting our personal or online copies of this week’s feature!

THIS WEEK’S PRESENTATION: “Phantom of Chinatown” (1940; 62 minutes)

FEATURE INTRODUCTION: In the middle of a pictorial lecture on his recent expedition to the Mongolian Desert, Dr. John Benton the famous explorer, drinks from the water bottle on his lecture table, collapses and dies. His last words "Eternal Fire" are the only clue Chinese detective Jimmy Wong and Captain Street of the police department have to work on. Win Lee, Benton's secretary, reveals the doctor's dying words refer to a scroll which tells the location of rich oil deposits. Wong and Street then begin the search for the killer among Benton's associates. (IMDb; Les Adams; longhorn1939@suddenlink.net)

FEATURE NOTES: When Boris Karloff left the Mr. Wong series, Keye Luke was his replacement for this final series entry. “Phantom of Chinatown” is possibly the first instance where Hollywood produced a “prequel,” because this final series entry depicts the first meeting between a young Mr. Wong and Capt. Street. It is also the only film during his long movie career in which Keye Luke receives top billing. Lee Tung Foo continues his role as Wong’s butler, Foo.
