OUR MONDAY EVENING CHAT AND FILM VIEWINGS FOR JUNE 20 & 27 “Murder Over New York” & "Dead Men

FROM CHARLIE CHAN: “Nut easy to crack often empty." (“Murder Over New York”)

GREETINGS: As I will be out of the country for the next two Mondays, I am now sharing a double dosage of information regarding our two feature films. If circumstances allow, I will try to drop by. Thank you so much to Matt has kindly agreed to be our host!

We Begin our evening at 7:30 Eastern Time with a 45-minute time for arrivals and greetings. During this time, we also have the opportunity to engage in open dialogue or perhaps an impromptu sharing of a short video upon request! Then, at precisely 8:15, we begin our feature films simultaneously by starting our personal or online copies of both weeks’ features att he same moment!

“MURDER OVER NEW YORK”: “Murder Over New York” (1940; 65 minutes)

FEATURE INTRODUCTION: Charlie Chan, continuing for a murdered colleague, and assisted by Number Two Son, Jimmy, seeks to uncover the identity of a strangler who strikes multiple times on an around-the-world cruise ship bound from Honolulu to San Francisco.

FEATURE NOTES: The working title of this film was “Charlie Chan in New York.” According to Fox publicity material contained in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Library files, the studio changed the title in order to prevent the public from confusing this film with other Chan features.

“DEAD MEN TELL”: “Dead Men Tell” (1941; 61 minutes)

FEATURE INTRODUCTION: The lure of millions of dollars in lost pirate treasure brings together an unusual and diverse group of fortune hunters aboard an old sailing ship, including Jimmy Chan, who sneaks aboard. Patience Nodbury, who holds the treasure map, torn in four pieces, dies suddenly, the apparent victim of the ghost of a long-dead pirate. Charlie Chan, on board the docked ship to locate his wayward son now finds himself in the midst of a case of what he believes to be murder.

FEATURE NOTES: According to ‘Hollywood Reporter’ news items, Jean Rogers was to have appeared in this film as Laura Thursday, but was replaced after shooting began by Katherine Aldridge when she became ill with the flu. ‘Hollywood Reporter’ production charts include Faye Helm in the cast, but her participation in the completed film has not been confirmed
