My late father often quoted Charlie Chan aphorisms. At meal times he would frequently say to us 'Soup is Food not musical instrument'. There was one saying he would repeat but never explain fully. Charlie Chan says 'No man knows when the WHITE gates shall open' or 'No one knows when the WIDE gates shall open.' Anyone know which is the right version and what film it comes from?
