Another interesting Chan item from Hollywood Reporter...
Their July 28th issue has a historical overview of Hollywood films sent abroad. One article discusses films that were censored or banned in other countries. The article states that the April 16, 1937 issue included an item that "the Nazis had banned CHARLIE CHAN AT THE OPERA because the picture contained 'too many murders'." As Ripley would say, Believe it, or not!
Other oddities in the article include the Dutch censors turning down several Three Stooges shorts "for no particular reason" and Hungarian censors refused MY MAN GODFREY due to the film's "poor people's angles". Evidentally, Australia and Ireland were usually the most strict countries.
