Pressure groups

Dear Rush, With reference to your "post" [Re:Re: Charlie Chan Pictures dated: Aug 16,05 12:39 PM]. Your observation that certain "pressure groups" could adopt mis-leading tactics in order to present a sort of "united-front" is a good point. The answer to the question you posed at the end of your message, "Through their actions are they not, in essence, claiming that "all Asians are alike"? would, of course, appear to be "yes". I've read that one of the ojections raised by complainers is the use, by Chan, of "pidgin" or "broken" English. Do any of these self-styled critics ever actually watch the films they have the presumption to "slate"? If they did they would find the Chan character to be both articulate and eloquent. As scripted Mr. Chan's use of English allows him, ever the gentleman, to remain perfectly polite and, at the same time, make quite cutting observations. Regards Tom.

Re: Pressure groups

Dear Tom,

Agreed! In no way does Charlie Chan use "pidgin" English, a fact which was verified by Keye Luke himself in an interview (the transcription of which may be read at our Study section). Chan was, as you state, very elloquent, and could take on all comers verbally when the situation demanded. In fact, many of the films contain situations in which Chan's adveraries misjudged his intelligence and abilities, much to their ultimate chagrin! I believe that Charlie Chan's present day adversaries run the same risk, perhaps...

Sincerely,
Rush
