Hi,
Re: Sidney Toler's last few films. Most articles containing biographical information on Mr.Toler usually state that he was so ill he was "barely able to walk" or, words to that effect. I must admit I've always found this mildly puzzling. Although undoubtedly very ill, Sidney gives a very reasonable impression of being able to walk without any difficulty [or so it seems to me]. This was probably a great tribute to the man, and enhances his legend.
Regards, Tom
I hadn't known that Sidney Toler was supposed to be so ill when I started wathcing his later Monograms. I figured he was just getting older because I think he was in his 70's by this point.
I've always felt that Toler put himself into the role
of Charlie Chan with a great tenacity. He really loved
the character. Thats why he always was & always
will be My favorite actor to portray the wise detective.
If I remember correctly,in "The Scarlet Clue" Sydney Toler had to be helped down into a boat near the beginning of the movie. I would have checked on this but my VCR is on the blink.
Dear Jack,
You are perfectly correct. The two detectives Charlie meets up with near the begining of the movie, help him on to the boat. And quite a dainty little job they make of it too.
