Charlie Chan New DVDs

Dear Chanfans: A while ago I visited your site for several weeks and joined in your Monday night Chan film viewings. Then one week, while trying to find out about the Lucy Liu project online my machine caught a virus and was laid low for some time. After that, I was a bit reluctant to venture out much online. Recently, I saw TCM ran a Friday night slate of remastered Sherlock Holmes films. I decided to check out available DVDs. I was amazed to see the two Warner Oland Charlie Chan DVD collections put out by Fox. This tells me that the day of Chan respectability is here. I sent away for Volume One right away. In fact, I am watching "Charlie Chan in London" as I type this. The various people interviewed for "The Legacy of Charlie Chan" featurette forcefully disputed the negative things said about Charlie in politically correct circles. In fact, one defender's name sounded suspiciously familiar. All this reminds me of the talk of Lucy Liu and her Charlie Chan project. I wonder if this means that it might actually happen now? And would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Personally, I'd rather see a new Charlie Chan then a granddaughter. It strikes me of the ill-conceived USA Network Nancy Drew and Daughter TV movie proposal several years ago staring Margot Kidder as a middle-aged Nancy. Sincerely, Russell

Re: Charlie Chan New DVDs

Dear Russell,

Thank you. Your purchase and enjoyment of Volume One will help, in a small, yet menaingful way, to let the powers that be at Fox that their Charlie Chan material remains popular, and will continue to be profitable. The bottom line, as we know, is always at the top of the list!

Regarding Lucy Liu's proposed "Charlie Chan" film, I took a look at the most recent information (from about a year ago), and her comments were not too encouraging, I felt. It seems that she holds very little appreciation, let alone understanding, for her honorable "grandfather." Of course, we can hope for the best. In my humble opinion, she could put together a truly meaningfil piece of Chan lore that will be of some lasting value, or, she can follow the path to a few quick bucks and a soon-to-be forgotten (and happily so) film. Again, hope, however faint, still sprouts a blossom or two...

Sincerely,
Rush Glick

My suspicion... This will be Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen II.

Dear Douglas,

Agreed, sadly! Alas...would that it could be that "good."
