Re: Re: BLACK DRAGONS (1940)

Speaking of vintage Keye Luke cameo's, if you Rush or anyone else gets a chance, try and check out "Andy Hardy's Blonde Trouble" from 1944.

This one is actually more than a cameo for Luke, as he plays a new physician in the tiny town of Carvel - Dr. Lee Wong How (? I know he's referred to as 'Dr. Lee' - I'll have to look at the film again, as I think he only stated his character's full name when he first introduced himself to the Judge) - who makes an office call to Andy's dad, Judge James Hardy, who's under the weather.

Remember, WWII was still on when this film was shot, and upon seeing Dr. Lee, Judge Hardy is nearly terrified that Dr. Lee is what HE thinks is a "jap". Dr. Lee immediately sets his mind at ease by explaining that he's indeed Chinese and that he's been in this country for some time.

Keye's still got his wit in this flick and makes the most of it, including buying Andy Hardy's old jalopy off of the Judge, fixing said jalopy up and outfitting it with automatic push button doors and even what could be the world's first car alarm (a siren and I sign that pops out of the rumble seat saying "I'm being stolen!")!

Anyways, Keye makes two extended appearances in 1944's "Andy Hardy's Blonde Trouble". Even if you may not like the Hardy series of films, this one's worth checking out because of Keye Luke. Funny, witty and just great.

Re: Re: Re: BLACK DRAGONS (1940)

If I remember correctly, Luke's character of Dr. Lee Wong How originated in "Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant" (1942).

Lionel Barrymore's Gillespie was checking out Van Johnson (Dr. Randall Stuart), Richard Quine (Dr. Dennis Lindsay) and Luke to replace Lew Ayres.

Shoot, maybe I somehow "cross matched" Luke's characters? I'll have to dig out my VHS stash again & check the name for sure, but Luke's definitely a "new" physician in town in 1944's "Andy Hardy's Blonde Trouble".

Edit: Why didn't I think of this before? IMDB.com has the movie listed, only Luke's character is listed as "Dr. Lee Wong Howe", not "How" like I mistakenly posted. Here's the link:

Shows how dependable my memory is these days.....

Sorry for the mix-up. Still a great Keye Luke "cameo" though.

Re: BLACK DRAGONS (1940)

If this is the one with Clayton Moore in an early role, then I haven't noticed Keye Luke.

Thanks for an excuse to watch it again!
