Our Films for August

During our Monday Evening Chat and Film Vireing this week, a few films for the month of August were suggested. One was "Mr. Moto's Gamble," which was originally going to be "Charlie Chan at the Ringside." Other possibilities include "Eran Trece" (the Spanish Language version of the "lost" "Charlie Chan Carries On"), and a Roland Winters Chan film (the next in line to be shown would be "The Golden Eye," although "The Sky Dragon" was specifically mentioned.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other possible Charlie Chan movies for August, bearing in mind that in September, we will feature the movies contained in the "Charlie Chan Collection, Volume 3"?

"Thank you so much..."

Sincerely,
Rush Glick

Re: Our Films for August

I think they are all excellent suggestions. The Mr. Moto film would be a particularly interesting entree. A curiosity, a look at what might have been. Of course, I don't have any of his films and have not seen them in many years. I hesitate to buy them worried they would just collect dust on a shelf. (no such worries with the estimable Lt. Chan) While I like them , I don’t love them enough to spend the $40 plus dollars for the set. It might be interesting to screen a few of them and compare them to the Chan series. Then there’s the Mr. Wong films. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen the one with Keye Luke.

Dear Russell,

I understand your feelings about purchasing films that may "collect dust." However, I did see both Mr. Moto sets at Costco selling for, I believe, $31.99 each just last week, if this helps.

Sincerely,
Rush

Re: Re: Our Films for August

The Mr. Wong films are great. The one with Luke as Mr. Wong is a bit of a stretch after having seen the others, but well done & fun to watch. I especially like the scenes with Lee Tong Fu fussing about.

Re: Re: Re: Our Films for August

I finally heard that the one with Keye Luke was supposed to be a prequel to the first five.

Prequel or not, it just doesn't work for me and I adore Luke.

Maybe if they had given him his own detective series . . . who knows.
