Are there any known legit color photos of either Oland or Toler either as Chan or as they were in real life? I don't believe I've ever seen one.
Finding one of Oland might be a challenge because he died in 1938 before color photography became more affordable but certainly Toler lived long enough to see color shots become more common.
An interesting question. I know that I have never seen such an image for either Toler or Oland. Of course, the color title cards or posters with these gentlemen in chatacter would hardly count, as these were artificially "colorized."
Any true color images would probably have been taken by family or friends.
I agree with you that it would have to be family/friends that would have taken such pictures. Fan magazines of the 40s often featured color photos of stars but since these were aimed at younger buyers pictures were often young starlets or handsome young actors. I don't think a centerfold of a 70 year old Sidney Toler was going to sell many issues to teenage girls in those days :)
