Sidney Toler and Keye Luke?

I have read interviews with Keye Luke, who talked about Warner Oland (he also talked about Roland Winters a little). Does anyone know if Keye Luke ever said anything about Sidney Toler- what he thought of his characterization of Charlie Chan, etc.?

Re: Sidney Toler and Keye Luke?

Dear Issac,

As Keye Luke did not work with Sidney Toler, it seems that he didn't have too much to say in his regard. However, we have an interesting interview in our Study the three major Chan "sons," Keye Luke, Victor Sen Yung, and Benson Fong. In this interview, the latter two make mention of Mr. Toler. The interview, conducted in 1977, can be found at: http://charliechanfamily.tripod.com/id89.html

Of course, Keye Luke worked mainly with Warner Oland in the Charlie Chan series, and the two developed, on screen as well as off, what could almost be called a father-son relationship. This is illustrated, I think, in the transcription of an interview that Mr. Luke made for Canadian television in the mid-1980s, also found in our Study. Additionally, as he worked in two films with Roland Winters, he would have had something to relate about that actor.

Sincerely,
Rush Glick

Rush,
I have a set of DVD's of the serial, "The Adventures of Smilin' Jack," done during WWII with Keye Luke as Captain Wing.
He had several scenes with Sidney Toler as General Kai Ling.
It's interesting but get it only if you have that much discretionary funds to spend!

Re: Re: Re: Sidney Toler and Keye Luke?

Dear Virginia,

Thank you! As I wrote my earlier post, I had a nagging feeling in the rear recesses of my feeble mind that there was at least one instance where Keye Luke acted in the same picture as the honorable Sidney Toler. I will try to one day watch this series.

Sincerely,
Rush

Thank you, Rush, for your help. I enjoyed seeing you on the new Chan DVDs as well.

Hello Virginia. Still working on the videos, but almost done. Sorry it's been so long, but the last 3 weeks have been insane for me.

Interesting you mentioned "Adventures of Smilin' Jack." I just peeked at the Alpha dvd releases for November at Oldies.com and they listed this serial! It's only going to cost $8.50 for the dvd so it's a great bargain and will be well worth checking out! I imagine a few folks here will want to take a look at this one.

The web page for this listing is

Thanks again for pointing this one out, Virginia.
