Re Hard to Find Movies

Dear Virginia,

The market for so called "grey market" films has largely dried up since so many films are now available commercially. Also, several have gotten shut down via legal action. Certainly anyone still selling Charlie Chan, Bowery Boys or Sherlock Holmes films is asking for big trouble.

There are some outfits like Sinister Cinema, Grapevine Video that specialize in hard to find films that are not likely to ever be released by a major studio or films which are truly public domain. Sinister is currently running ads promoting double features of various Monogram crime films that they have released. A google search should turn up their websites.

VCI Entertainment is another good source for hard to find stuff. Like the other two, they operate within the law. VCI sells a lot of serials as does Serial Squadron.

I hope this helps!

Steve

Re: Hard to Find Movies

Virginia,

I'm not really sure if this is what you are looking for, but I think I may have mentioned a web site during our Monday night Chan Chat's, where I have purchased a few Chan DVD's from "The Classic Theater". I have all the Chan sets that were released, but when we view a film not included in one of the boxed sets, I go to this site and buy them there.

You can either buy all the Chan films at one set price or one DVD, which has three Chan films on it. They do have other old movies and TV shows for sale too. The price, I think, is extremley reasonable, with various shipping options.

I don't know it it's "legit", but I can tell you that I have no reason to believe that they're not. I have ordered from them four different times and have never had anything but a good experience with them.

Here is the web site:

I hope this is heplful.

Matt,
Thank you, too!

Re: Re: Hard to Find Movies

Unfortunately the site you mentioned is more than a grey market company, they are black market are are definitely selling illegal product they've probably dubbed from commercial copies.

Just an FYI.

Re: Re: Re: Hard to Find Movies

Steve,With almost all of the FOX CHAN's out via legit DVD, Why isn't FOX aggressively going after these grey and black market companies? If they were selling bootlegs of current movies, they'd go after them but not the classic movies. If I was FOX, I would sue them to the point of putting them out of business! These bootleggers would be forced to go out and beg money with a Tin Cup, like many homeless people do. I would rather that Hard To Find Movies rot away in the studio vault then have some bootlegger profit from them in Subpar, Atrocious looking Videos!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Hard to Find Movies

Sorry, I didn't want to appear to mean spirited. It is just that bootleggers are irritating me. With the bootleggers product out there, Most studios would be hesitant to release classic movies on DVD. We are just lucky to have FOX release all those CHAN's on DVD. Now if only WARNER will release the remaining CHAN's than noone will have to depend on the bootleggers to watch CHARLIE CHAN.
