Re: Your Views on Roland Winters, what went right, what went wrong

It is hard to fill the shoes of Warner Oland or Sydney Toler. At first I was a little taken aback by Mr. Winters' interpretation of Lt. Chan. (Why wasn't he promoted to Captain?!?!?!)

After watching all the Roland Winters' "Chan" movies, I've grown, "accustomed to his face;>D Bear in mind, "The Chinese Ring" is the best copy of his work I have--the other five "gray" copies are in poor shape and the scratches and skipping are very distracting--WB Help!!!

Mr. Winters brings his own unique interpretation to the role of Charlie Chan. As a professional actor, he didn't need to co-opt either of his predecessors' acting styles, dress, or make-up. Ken Hanke in his "Charlie Chan at the Movies," praises Mr. Winters' interpretation, and I agree, FWIW.

Note: If Charlie Chan is ever brought back to televison, or to the movies, I'd hope an actor such as B.D. Wong, Jason Scott Lee, or some other actor with an Asian background would be cast. (This would, hopefully, prevent the "PCers" from protesting the continuation of Charlie Chan.)

Re: Your Views on Roland Winters, what went right, what went wrong

well in consideration of your comments, it may be premmature for me and my view since I have only seen one movie. The immediate things I saw gave me the reason to write what I did. I sort of went into it rather biased that the Roland Chan interpretation would be less than good. I got that mainly from reading some things before when exploring around about Chan films and what all was available. I just recalled that several places on the net sort of bashed Winters a bit for his style.

I hope to get a better view of him if TCM or someone can get us those other Chan films on DVDs.

Re: Your Views on Roland Winters, what went right, what went wrong

Hello: It may be worth your while to get an early view of Roland Winters' Chans on DVD-R. The only place I was able to find them, currently, was at cclvideo.com. Go to "Classic Movies," and follow the links. (Note: I have NO affiliation with this company!) The copies are watchable (from 16mm copies, I think), but certainly NOT the quality of TCM/Warners. I have them, and I'd charitably rate them at 7+ to 8. Of course, one MUST get the official releases, as I have done, as soon as they are released. However, until all the Winters' versions are released, one must still find some way to watch them...

Dear Teil,

Well said.

Re: Your Views on Roland Winters, what went right, what went wrong

Thank you, sir! I was a tad afraid to mention a place to obtain unofficial (pending official) release copies. I hope no one was offended! Poor Mr. Withers' Chan portrayals have not gotten the attention they deserve; however, I trust TCM/Warners will rectify that someday soon.
