I have read the book, and you can read my thoughts in the review that I wrote which appears at the Entrance of this website.
In brief, I found this book to offer a VERY refreshing break from the "trash Charlie Chan" midset that has seemingly held sway in recent times, particularly in the mainstream media and academia. (In fact, it should be noted that reviews of Professor Huang's book seem to have resulted in the media taking a few steps in the other direction. Please note the NPR review in this regard!) I think that you will find this to be a very fair, even-handed, and surprise-filled appraisal of the great detective and American icon.
