Warner Oland on TCM

Another interesting aspect about viewing the Charlie Chan films is to see the who, when, and why a "Chan player" entered the series.

For example, we all know that Warner Oland played Dr. Fu Manchu several times on films before, and during, his early years of portraying Charlie Chan.

Other interesting examples of "Chan players" entering the series include the following examples:

Keye Luke made his film debut in "The Painted Veil" (1934) co-starring Warner Oland. Luke's appearance in this film, opposite Mr. Oland, may have been a factor in Luke being selected to play Number One Son in the Chan series.

Sidney Toler won the role of Charlie Chan because, like Oland, his played an Asian character in an earlier motion picture.

I could go on, but you get the point.

On Sunday, July 10th, we have the opportunity to see Warner Oland in an exciting silent film five years before he put on the white suit of Inspector Chan.

At 12:15 a.m. (ET), on Sunday the 10th, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will broadcast "Don Juan" (1926) starring John Barrymore and co-starring Warner Oland. In this film, Mr. Oland plays the part of Cesare Borgia.

Among the featured players in this film are two actresses who would go on to appear in classic mystery movies of the 1930s and 1940s. We have Mary Astor and Myrna Loy in this film too.

Check your local TV listings for this special showing of the exciting silent film "Don Juan" on TCM. And ladies, if you feel somebody kissing your hand during the movie, don't worry. It's only Don Juan.
