Request for an interview

Dear Sirs,
This is not a message to the Forum but to one of you behind this site, one of the serious Charlie Chan fan, that is.
My name is Anders Sjogren and i live in Umea, Sweden, a town that is situated half an hour drive from Bjurholm. And Bjurholm is, as you know, the birthplace of Warner Oland.
In 2014 Umea will be The European Capital of Culture (a EU-project)and I and some friends in the "Warner Oland Academy" in Bjurholm are åplaning to write a book and a play (a monolog) about Warner Oland. There are also plans of a Oland monument and a kind of museum in Bjurholm.
In august we are going to the Capitolfest in Rome, New York, a festival that specialices in silent and early sound film. The tribute star this year is... Warner Oland.
I will have one week free after the festival, 14-21 august, and I would be thrilled if I could meet and talk to some "hard core" Charlie Chan fan! I would of course also like to talk about Warner Oland and I would be very pleased if someone could bring new light about his life and career. Though, the meeting has to be somewhre on the east coast, I don´t have the money to go west.
Hopeful for a reply!
Best regards,
Anders Sjogren

Re: Request for an interview

I saw your notice on the Charlie Chan family message board. I personally will not able to attend the festival in Rome, NY. I have been a member of this group for a few years now and enjoy group viewing Chan films with the chat room. I wanted to let you know about a gentleman in the state of New York who is connected to Charlie Chan films. I put his contact information below to help you get in touch with him, Harvey Chertok. I hope that will be OK with him?

Last year at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention held near Baltimore he aired a documentary about Charlie Chan films that had not been shown since it's airing in the 60s at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This film was originally edited by him, Harvey Chertok, who showed his copy at this event. He is the president of Quartet International, Inc. (20 Butternut Dr, Pearl River, NY 10965). Since he is located in New York state, you may wish to be in touch with him. TEL: (845) 735-8700, FAX: (845) 735-8999. His email is tvshowbizz@aol.com and his website is www.tvshowbiz.com.

This year I will be attending this same festival in Maryland over August 9-11, the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (http://midatlanticnostalgiaconvention.com/). It is a little north of Baltimore. If you have the time and can attend, it might be a good place to talk with fans of classic films. I would be available to talk with you. (My personal interest in Warner Oland started with horror films "Werewolf of London" and his work with Boris Karloff in "Charlie Chan at the Opera" - which introduced me to Chan. From there, I have grown in appreciation for is other works such as "Shanghai Express".)

I also emailed you this message to you and included a photo of Mr. Chertok's business card. Check your email.

Re: Request for an interview

Hello
Do you know about the Oland documentary that was made a few years ago by Swedish Televison? I think it was called The Chinaman from Sweden, and it aired only once. I checked with them and it is not for sale because of copyright issues. The most knowledgeable person I know about Chan is the very modest Rush Glick. David Lewis, who evidently has quite a collection of Warner Oland material, has been coming out wth a biography for years. It hasn't happened. However, I have contact info for him if you want it. Lastly, many of Oland's early films are available from Loving the Classics. Anne

Re: Request for an interview

Anders,

I just checked. The documentary, from 2004, was called "Warner Oland: The Chinese from Bjurholm." It was directed by Anders Lindquist.
