Tonight's Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "The Chinese Ring"

As we honor those who have served our country's call, our film for this week’s Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing will be “The Chinese Ring,” starring Roland Winters. With this picture, we again resume our collective tour through the Charlie Chan film series proper following two brief side trips. As we move through this, the final leg of our year long excursion, we will also be viewing the original sources of two of our Chan movies in the form of two "Mr. Wong" adventures starring Boris Karloff.

This week's tale is the first of six Chan mysteries to feature Roland Winters in the title role. Following the completion of "The Trap," the venerable Sidney Toler succumbed to the ravages of cancer, and for the series to continue, another actor was required to portray the Chinese detective. James S. Burkett, who, with Philip N. Krasne, had purchased the screen rights to Charlie Chan from Sidney Toler in 1943, had Winters, who was thirty years younger than Toler, test for the role. Immediately after Winters' trial scene, Burkett informed him that the part was his.

In "The Chinese Ring," we see the Chinese detective attempt to unravel a complex web of international intrigue and murder, which begins with the demise of a Chinese princess in Chan's new San Francisco home. He is assisted by Number Two Son Tommy who was known previously as Jimmy! (Theories on the name change abound, and everyone is welcome to form their own and present same tonight!) Also, joining in is mainstay Birmingham Brown.

So, please join us in our Chat Room which is located HERE at our Charlie Chan Family Home. Please use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 30 minutes later.

Even if you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, newcomers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. (Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing online through such outlets as YouTube, etc. Happily, "The Chinese Ring" IS available to those in need of a copy at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thzqu726MmQ
Thank you so much, and let’s meet for yet another fun Monday evening as we gather to watch “The Chinese Ring.”

(PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to receive weekly email announcements regarding our Monday Evening Chats, as well as receive high-quality scanned movie still images (one per week) from our films of the week, please email us at: charliechanfamily@yahoo.com.)

Sincerely,
