This Week's Monday Evening Chat/Film Viewing: "Mr. Wong Detective"

Greetings, as we arrive at the month of December, the final month of our year-long journey through the Charlie Chan film series.

This week’s Monday Evening Chat and Film Viewing will feature another film from the Mr. Wong series, “Mr. Wong Detective,” starring Boris Karloff as detective James Lee Wong. This 1938 movie provided the basic story for our movie from last week, “Docks of New Orleans,” which starred Roland Winters as Charlie Chan. Again, as was the case with “The Chinese Ring” and the Wong adventure, “Mr. Wong in Chinatown,” we will be able to make comparisons between the Chan and Wong versions! Also¸we once again see Mr. Karloff, who appeared in the Charlie Chan film “Charlie Chan at the Opera” opposite warner Oland, and who appeared in the “quasi-Chan” film “Behind That Curtain” from 1929.

Please join us in our Chat Room which is located at our Charlie Chan Family Home: www.charliechan.info, and use any of the “Chat Room” links to join us. We begin with arrivals and greetings at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and we roll our personal copies of our film exactly 15 minutes later (8:15).

FILM NOTES: “Mr. Wong Detective” (released October 5, 1938) was the first film in the six-film Mr. Wong series from Monogram Pictures. Boris Karloff starred in five with Keye Luke portraying a young James Lee Wong in the sixth and final entry. Look for a couple of familiar supporting actors in this film…

Even if you cannot access a copy of the above-noted film, please do join us anyway, as you will NOT be left out of our ongoing chat and festivities. Also, as is our custom, newcomers are offered the seat of honor at our humble table. Many of our films, such as this week’s entry, may be found available for viewing online through such outlets as YouTube, etc. Also, GOOD NEWS…this week’s film, “Mr. Wong Detective,” IS available at YouTube if needed for viewing at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vlJ-HraBRY

NEXT WEEK (December 9) we will viewing of “The Shanghai Chest,” starring Roland Winters.

A CONTINUED HUMBLE REMINDER: If you have not already done so, please consider ordering your copy of the new “Charlie Chan Collection” Warner Brothers box DVD collection! The best price I have found thus far is from Amazon.com at $28.79 with FREE postage! Hawaii Steve notes that this collection may be purchased at Oldies.com for $21.80 plus postage! So, get yours now!

Please take care, have a pleasant remainder of the weekend and Monday, and let’s all get together for another Chan-filled evening of fun and sharing as we watch Boris Karloff in “Mr. Wong Detective.”

Sincerely,
Rush Glick
